A NINE-year-old boy cried in court as he was charged with the murder of his five loved ones who burned to death in a horrific house fire.

The child appeared confused at times during the hearing at Illinois court, before quietly crying to himself.

The boy is facing five counts of first-degree murder for allegedly starting the blaze on April 6 at the Timberline Mobile Home Park near Goodfield, about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.

After the fire broke out, the boy ran next to door to his grandparents’ house, shouting: “The house in on fire! Help!” the Journal Star reported.

One-year-old Ariel Wall; her brother Daemeon Wall and cousin Rose Alwood, both aged two; Ariel and Daemeon’s father, 34-year-old Jason Wall, and the children’s maternal great-grandmother, 69-year-old Kathryn Murray did not survive.

But Mum Katrina Alwood, 28, completely backs her son.

‘PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES’

She told CBS News: “Everyone is looking at him like he’s some kind of monster.

“People make mistakes, and that’s what this is. Yes, it was a horrible tragedy, but it’s still not something to throw his life away over.”

The boy is set to return to court on November 22.

Under Illinois law, a suspect younger than 10 cannot be detained.

And a minor is not given a public jury trial and not entitled to one unless the minor is charged as an adult.

No child as young as this one has been accused in a mass killing since at least 2006, records show.

Prosecutors will now be challenged with trying to prove the child formed an intent to kill in advance – a requirement in first-degree cases.

But Gus Kostopoulos, a juvenile defence lawyer in Chicago, said: “Nine-year-olds don’t know that Santa Claus doesn’t exist.

“They don’t know people die and don’t come back to life.

“I don’t know if 9-year-old’s can form intent to commit murder.”
